ReplyThat's a good question, Jenny. Any firefighters or Salisbury residents out there who can answer that? I tend to think the firetruck with Santa would pull over to the curb if residents came out of their houses when they hear the sirens and music but I don't know for sure.

ReplyMr. Miller, why should we ignore the experience of Canada and Australia? Their populations are more similar to ours than, say, the Swiss who another commenter on a different story held up as a good example of a population in which the men are required to get firearms training as part of their mandatory national service in the militia and traditionally keep a gun in the home. As for restrictions hurting law-abiding gun owners, by all accounts that I've read, Adam Lanza's mother was a law-abiding gun owner but it didn't stop her son from using her guns for a massacre. I'm interested in practical solutions, so other than saying people should be better people (we can all agree on that) what would you suggest to prevent these tragedies?

ReplyCarol, I agree that 59 voting divisions with not one vote for Romney needs to be checked out. The Philadelphia Inquirer is the source of that information and I'd encourage everyone to read their whole story in this link. http://mobile.philly.com/news/?wss=/philly/news/politics/&id=178742021&viewAll=y
But requiring voters at the polls to have a photo ID would not have prevented election workers from changing ballots or tampering with the vote count, if indeed that happened. I am against mandating the photo ID because it is an unnecessary level of bureaucracy to solve a type of fraud that no one can produce evidence of in Pennsylvania. The League of Women Voters has documented examples of legitimate registered voters in Wisconsin and Ohio who were not able to vote because of problems with ID that were not their fault. See here: http://www.lwv.org/content/testimony-elisabeth-macnamara-lwvus-president-us-senate-committee-judiciary
I will bet you everything I own that there will be similar problems for voters if the new law is enforced here. It is a crime to take away someone's right to vote in order to enforce a law that won't prevent any of the kinds of voter fraud people are talking about here.

My family is happy to continue to pay the library tax because it gives us access to books, audio books, DVDs, CDs and other materials and services from all Pennsylvania public libraries through the Access Pennsylvania sticker on our cards. We use the Emmaus Library most often because it is closest to us and because the librarians are wonderfully helpful. We also use the Allentown Library, which has a great selection. But we also support paying the library tax for the same reason we pay school taxes -- our country needs educated citizens and an educated work force and libraries are a great way for people from all walks of life to educate themselves.
