Whiz Kids: Music Students Will Represent Parkland At National Conference

The All-Eastern Honors Ensembles Conference will be March 31-April 3 in Baltimore.

Names: Rachael Hendricks, Ellen Choi, Reno Kriz,  Alina Spiegel, Meg Stefanowicz, Morgan Reilly, Nicholas Roehler, Josh Rice and Curtis Rabe. School: Parkland High School.   Greatest Accomplishment: Combined, too many to mention. As Whiz Kids, being chosen to represent Parkland in the 52ndAnnual Music Educators National Conference Eastern Division All-Eastern Honors Ensembles Conference March 31-April 3 in Baltimore. They will split up and rehearse as band, orchestra and choral groups, then perform in three concerts: the All-Eastern Jazz Ensemble with Sherri Maricle and the DIVA Jazz Orchestra at 8 p.m. April 2 at the Baltimore Convention Center; and in two concerts April 3,  combined band and orchestra at 12:30 p.m. and choral at 3 p.m.  …

Whiz Kid Daniel Wang: Cool as a Cucumber

A trophy's good, a scholarship's better.

Name: Daniel Wang, 13 School: Springhouse Middle School, 8th grade Greatest Accomplishment: Taking second-place honors during the 27th Annual Lehigh Valley MATHCOUNTS regional competition last month. Coached by Kevin Hallman, his team was the top-ranked team of 33 schools from four counties that participated in the contest. For achieving that honor, the team will advance to the state competition March 18-19 at the Sheraton Hershey Hotel. Key to Awesomeness: His laid-back personality. Daniel’s cool demeanor is evident by the fact that he knows his capabilities and doesn’t feel the need to approach others with an “in-your-face” attitude, except when he commented that “Springhouse usually does better than Orefield Middle School at MATHCOUNTS…

Whiz Kid Yogeshwar Velingker: Math Is His Forte

He's headed to state math competition next month

Name: Yogeshwar Velingker, age 11 School/Church: Orefield Middle School,  sixth grade; attends Hindu temple in Allentown Greatest Accomplishment: Winning first place in the 27th Annual Lehigh Valley MATHCOUNTS regional competition held earlier this month, giving him the opportunity to move on to the state level of the national “Olympics of Math” sponsored by the National Society of Professional Engineers. He will compete March 18-19 at the Sheraton Harrisburg Hotel in Hershey.  If he finishes in the top four, will travel to Washington, D.C. in May to vie for national honors.
