Local Actor Dane DeHaan Stars in 'The Place Beyond the Pines' With Ryan Gosling

Epic crime drama 'The Place Beyond the Pines' featuring Lehigh Valley native Dane DeHaan will be in most theaters Friday.

A new crime drama starring Emmaus High School graduate Dane DeHaan has opened in select cities and will be shown widely starting April 12. "The Place Beyond the Pines" includes Ryan Gosling and Eva Mendes, who play DeHaan's parents, and Bradley Cooper. Examiner.com features an interview with DeHaan in which he says, "..the opportunities keep getting better and the scripts keep getting more interesting and the people I get to work with get more and more like awesome and it's kind of whirlwind." $371,000 Winning Lottery Ticket Sold in Orefield

Hess on Route 309 in Orefield sold a lottery ticket worth $371,000

Three jackpot-winning Pennsylvania Lottery Cash 5 tickets worth a combined total of nearly $1 million were recently sold in Lehigh and York counties. Two Cash 5 tickets each worth more than $371,000 from the Feb. 22 drawing were sold at Hess, 3640 Route 309, Orefield, Lehigh County, and Smoker’s Express, 110 Old York Road, New Cumberland, York County. The tickets correctly matched all five balls, 02-17-23-24-36, to win a jackpot of $371,418.50, less 25 percent federal withholding. Each store will receive a $500 bonus for selling a winning ticket. A Cash 5 ticket worth $225,000 from the Feb. 24 drawing was sold at Hess, 4002 Chestnut St., Emmaus, Lehigh County. It correctly matched all five balls, 06-12-14-15-26, to win a jackpot of $225,…

Lehigh Valley Mom Organizes Artwork for Sandy Hook Project

Lisa Fiore is asking everyone she knows to create artwork for the children and families of Sandy Hook Elementary School as a way to let them know people are thinking about them.

An Emmaus mom is urging her family and friends to grab their crayons and some construction paper and show their support for the Connecticut elementary school where last week a lone gunman went on a shooting rampage, killing 20 children and six adults. Lisa Fiore has been asking everyone she knows to create artwork for the children and families of Sandy Hook Elementary School to let them know that people all over the country are “thinking about them and holding them in healing thoughts.” And now, Fiore, mom to a second-grader at Shoemaker Elementary School, is asking the Emmaus Patch community to join the effort. “The children and families of this community are forever changed. Why Are the Butter-Eating French So Thin?

The French with their rich cuisine are thin because they are streetwalkers – but not in a bad way.

How is it that the French – whose national symbol is a pound of butter in the shape of a guillotine – are so darn thin? OK, the part about the butter guillotine I made up. But still. The French practically bathe in butter or at least their food does and yet the streets of Paris are littered with gazelle-like women who barely weigh 110 pounds soaking wet. But here’s the thing: the French walk. A lot. And that’s partly because their cities and towns are laid out in ways that make them very walkable and bikeable. Americans who visit Europe often return home marveling at how much walking they did in towns and cities that are pedestrian friendly.   I was reminded of this last week at a meeting in which people complained that the obesity …

Original Barbie Doll Worth Thousands

Woman’s childhood Barbie doll was the find of the night at antiques appraisal in Emmaus.

Name:  Joanne Henshaw Where do you live?  Boyertown Event:  Emmaus Historical Society Antique Appraisal What did you bring for appraisal? “I brought what I believe is an original Barbie doll from the 1950s.” Tell me about this item and why it is special to you:  “I received the doll as a child. I didn’t play with it very much and still have all the dresses and hats for it. I’m anxious to see what it’s worth. When I got her out of storage, she had a dress on and I decided to put the swimsuit on her that she came with. I actually sat and played with her for awhile like when I was little!” What were the auctioneer’s comments? “This is an exceptional piece.
