Springhouse Middle School Students to perform musical 'Once Upon a Mattress' on Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday.
Springhouse Middle School students this week will stage the musical "Once Upon a Mattress," an adaptation of the famous "Princess and the Pea" story. Performances are at 7 p.m. on Wednesday and Thursday; and at 2 p.m. on Sunday. More than 50 students are involved in the production, which is being directed by Jessica Manmiller. Musical Director is Alaina Prall, and Stage Crew leader is Mike Palazzo. Tickets are $3 at the door on Wednesday and Thursday; and $5 at the door for the Sunday matinee fundraiser. The Parkland School District is launching an Early Childhood Music Program for children 12 months to 5 years. The program is being launched by Springhouse Middle School music teacher Alaina Prall for the Parkland community. The 10-week First Steps in Music curriculum was designed by Dr. John Feierabend, an early childhood music specialist. Children and parents participate in the classes together, learning songs, rhymes, and movement activities. No musical experience is necessary. Jordan Tyler Steinmetz, 14, of Upper Macungie Township, died on October 26, 2012. Born in El Paso, TX, he was the son of Johnny E. and Madalene (Lopez) Steinmetz, Jr. Jordan currently was in the 8th grade at Springhouse Middle School. A feasibility study illustrates the need for about $24 million of repairs and maintenance districtwide, which will be financed by a bond. The plan will be presented to the board in September.
Editor's Note: Corrected to reflect when Kratzer Elementary School was last renovated. Parkland School District's Personnel and Finance Committee has completed a feasibility study to address borrowing money needed for districtwide repairs and maintenance. The committee will address the board with the study, performed by USA Architects, in September, asking to float a $24 million bond issue for the following items: Superintendent Rich Sniscak said Kratzer was last renovated in 1991 and the district is having trouble finding replacement parts for broken items. "This is the first step in a plan that in the next few months we should have the nuts and bolts of," said John Vignone, the district's director of business administration.

Due to the power outages in the township, the Upper Macungie Fire Commissioner, Grant Grim, has order an emergency shelter to be set up at Springhouse Middle School.
UPDATE: The Springhouse Shelter is no longer open because school is in session. The county opened a new shelter at the district's Troxell building. Upper Macungie Township Fire Commissioner, Grant Grim, with the Berks-Lehigh Regional Police, have set up an emergency shelter at the Springhouse Middle School, 1200 Springhouse Rd, Allentown. Residents who lose power and are seeking heat and shelter should go to Springhouse. The shelter opened at 6 p.m. Grim reports that numerous power outages in the Upper Macungie/South Whitehall Township area prompted the opening of a shelter.

A math teacher at Springhouse Middle School has the distinction of being the first teacher in the Parkland School District to announce his retirement for the end of the 2011-2012 school year. The Parkland School Board last week accepted the retirement of David H. Schaffer, who will retire after 38 years of service, effective June 30, 2012. “He plans everything to a 'T,'” Assistant Superintendent Rod Troutman told the school board. “It’s why he isn’t just a good math teacher, he’s an exceptional math teacher. I don’t know that Dave Schaffer’s shoes can be filled.” Following the meeting, Troutman said it should come as no surprise that Schaffer would be the first to look that far ahead and plan his retirement.
