These Projects Could Affect Your Taxes

Development in neighboring South Whitehall and North Whitehall townships will help boost assessments and tax collection within the entire Parkland School District.

Last week, Patch reported on development projects in Upper Macungie Township that will help keep school-related property taxes down. On Friday, during an all-day 2013-14 school budget seminar, the Parkland School Board also reported on similar development in neighboring South Whitehall and North Whitehall townships. Development in these neighboring sending districts will also help assessments and tax collection within the entire Parkland School District. According to the school district: In South Whitehall: In North Whitehall:

I cannot ever be shocked by the ludicrous articles and statements written about the Parkland tax situation. This one rises to the top, with next week's article ready to take over 1st place. EVERY one of these projects add revenues AND costs to these communities. When will this area recognize that true savings comes when NO MORE costs are paid for by decreasing dollars....a true savings! …   more ›

Apartment, Retail Complex Proposed in Upper Macungie

A developer has proposed building 450-unit luxury apartment and retail complex at Cetronia and Schantz roads in South Whitehall and Upper Macungie townships.

A developer has proposed building a 450-unit luxury apartment and retail complex on fields at Cetronia and Schantz roads in South Whitehall and Upper Macungie townships. KRE, of Bridgewater, N.J., presented a preliminary sketch plan Wednesday to the South Whitehall Board of Commissioners that includes a gated, four-story apartment complex of one- and two-bedroom apartments that would rent for $1,300 to $1,600. The design includes a clubhouse, private road, 30,000- to 40,000-square-feet of retail space that could house a high-end grocery story, such as Whole Foods, and two retail stores or restaurants, according to Tom Gough, director of development at KRE. Since the apartment buildings would have elevators, Gough told the board, they would…

I agree - area doesn't need any more housing let alone apartments that will rent for $1300-1600 per month for a one or two bedroom - really! Let's not rubber stamp this through - SWT and UMT are NOT what they used to be!   more ›

$450K Mobile Command Unit Eyed by Upper Macungie

Upper Macungie and South Whitehall officials agreed Wednesday to seek state and local grants to help pay for a new high-tech mobile emergency command unit.

Upper Macungie and South Whitehall officials agreed Wednesday night to seek state and local grants to help pay for a new $450,000 mobile emergency command post. The high-tech vehicle would be equipped with the latest communications technology, including satellite, that could be used in large-scale emergencies that require unified command and control, said Jeff Kelly, emergency management coordinator for South Whitehall. Officials from the two townships plan to pursue a Pennsylvania municipal assistance program grant from the Department of Economic and Community Development that would pay up to 75 percent of the total cost. They plan to garner support from state legislators and to seek funding from corporations and Lehigh County. If grant …

Groundhog Day Preview: Will Yahdee See His Shadow?

Forget Punxsutawney Phil. On Saturday, Feb. 2, Lehigh Valley 'groundhogs' Yahdee and Lee will appear in South Whitehall again to make a prognostication.

Will Yahdee the groundhog see his shadow this year? Punxsutawney has its Phil, but in the Lehigh Valley, Groundhog Day belongs to Yahdee (who has seen a taxidermist) and his grandson Lee (a puppet.) For the sixth time in seven years, Grundsau Lodge No. 16, formed to preserve the language and traditions of the Pennsylvania Dutch, will host a Groundhog Day event near Wehr's Dam in South Whitehall. Festivities will get under way at 7 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 2, with men in top hats, the "groundhogs," and songs sung in Pennsylvania Dutch. Yahdee and Lee will float on a raft (or sled if the creek freezes) 150 feet down Jordan Creek toward Wehr's Dam, then Lee will be brought on land and whisper a prediction to the lodge's president. If the …

Preparing for a Disaster: 5 Things to Do, Just in Case

To help residents, Upper Macungie Township will once again host an Emergency Preparedness Day from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 15, as part of National Preparedness Month.

You've heard all the "no-duh" tips before about preparing for a disaster - keep water and non-perishable food on hand, have a flashlight with extra batteries... But this month the federal government is hoping you will get down to details to make a plan for, not the unthinkable, but the inevitable: wild fires, tornadoes, hurricanes, floods or even terrorism and pandemics. To help residents prepare, Upper Macungie will partner with South Whitehall and North Whitehall once again, hosting an Emergency Preparedness Day from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 15, at 501 Cetronia Road, South Whitehall. The event is sponsored by South Whitehall, North Whitehall and Upper Macungie. It will feature classes on CPR, generator safety, babysitting and…

Shooting Staged at Parkland High School

Parkland High School in South Whitehall held a massive "active shooter" drill Wednesday along with local law enforcement to practice the response to a Columbine-like shooting tragedy.

Parkland High School officials and local law enforcement are now better prepared for a mass shooting event after holding an hours-long "active shooter drill" Wednesday morning. The drill was a simulation of how law enforcement and school officials would react in the event of mass shooting at the high school. Bob Werts, program manager of the Northeast Pennsylvania Regional Counter Terrorism Task Force, said the drill was important for several reasons. "What I feel is important is how tax dollars are being spent. They're being spent here for a very good reason," Werts said."This is the largest drill in our region. The second largest was at Jim Thorpe." Werts said the drill cost $16,000 through a state-funded grant. The drill started at 9 a.…
