The new Upper Macungie police station is scheduled to open tomorrow with new chief Edgardo Colon, Lt. Joe Wilson and Lt. Mike Sitoski being sworn into duty. The ceremony will take place at the new Upper Macungie police station at 37 Grim Road in Breinigsville. The Aug. 20 opening, which was mandated by Upper Macungie supervisors, will allow the chief and his two lieutenants to begin work in the department, which officially opens for business at midnight Dec. 31, 2012. The township has already hired 25 officers for its new police force.

Upper Macungie supervisors say they want the new police station finished by Aug. 20, so work can begin on transitioning from the Berks-Lehigh Regional Police Department. Director of Community Development Kenneth Moloney told supervisors that subcontractors will be expected to finish work by that date. "We will be forging along with the department, so that we will be operational at midnight on New Year's Eve," said supervisor Sam Ashmar. Earlier this year, Upper Macungie supervisors voted to disband from the Berks-Lehigh Regional Police Department for monetary reasons. Upper Macungie Township is expecting the construction of its new police station to be complete in June.
Construction of the new Upper Macungie Township police station is on track to be completed in June. Township Engineer Dean Haas said there was a delay in installing an elevator in the building. Earlier this month, the Berks-Lehigh Regional Police Commission voted to disband the police force at the end of this year. Upper Macungie Township Supervisors had already voted to withdraw from Berks-Lehigh and create the township's own police department. The supervisors were uphappy that the township provided about 76 percent of the funding for the department but only gets a 25 percent voting interest. The supervisors hired Edgardo A. Upper Macungie supervisors were informed Thursday night that the new Berks-Lehigh Regional Police station at 37 Grim Road should be completed soon and open by the end of April or early May. Director of Community Development Ken Molony told supervisors that much of the construction was moving along at a fairly rapid pace and, aside from some weather problems, should be completed on time. The Berks-Lehigh Police Regional Department has been headquartered out of Maxatawny Township during the construction period.
