Born of boring mathematical necessity, Leap Year has prompted a variety of romantic legends.
The reason Leap Year was invented is rather dull. But, in spite of its very practical reason for being, Leap Year has tickled the fancy of romantics around the world and through the ages.

Will it be six more weeks of winter, or will Punxsutawney Phil climb out of the burrow?
UPDATE: Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow, which means six more weeks of winter. How accurate will Phil’s weather prediction be for 2012? Make sure to take the Patch Poll below! ORIGINAL POST: On Feb. 2 of each year, according to tradition, the world’s most famous groundhog announces whether or not winter will soon end by either climbing out of his western Pennsylvania burrow, or retreating back to bed. If this is any indicator, I’m guessing that Punxsutawney Phil will not only leave his hole in the ground, but will likely set out a lawn chair and enjoy the early spring. But how did a groundhog graduate to meteorologist? Here are a few little-known facts about : 1. The first Groundhog Day was celebrated in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania in 1886…

How much do you know about the civil rights leader?
On Jan. 15, 1929, Martin Luther King Jr. was born. He was a man who would eventually become the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., a renowned leader in the advancement of civil rights around the world. Today, Jan. 16, we celebrate the birth of King as a day to promote equality among all people, regardless of background or ethnicity. Among his best-known accomplishments, King was a chief motivator in the movement to end racial segregation in the United States. He was the youngest man to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, and his beliefs in nonviolent activism reflected the work of Mahatma Gandhi. Here’s a few lesser-known facts: 1. Find out why people fear this particularly unlucky Friday.
The superstitious don’t have to wait very long in 2012 for the unluckiest of days to arrive: The first Friday the 13th is here. In fact, this is just the first of three -- the most possible occurrences in a single year -- in 2012, since April and July also will have a Friday fall on the 13th. But where does the superstition come from? No one really knows the exact origins of Friday the 13th, but historians speculate that it has to do with the combination of two superstitions -- that Friday is an unlucky day, and 13 is an unlucky number. The combo-superstition is a fairly recent one, at least in the written sense; there are few references to it earlier than the beginning of the 20th century. Friday has been an unlucky day since at least the…

You know Dasher and Dancer and Prancer and Vixen… but did you know that Christmas trees are edible?
It’s the most wonderful time of the year, according to someone. And even though that someone isn’t on our list of fun facts, there’s plenty of other Christmas trivia to enjoy this holiday season. So settle down with a mug of egg nog and enjoy our gift to you, these 10 things you probably didn’t know about Christmas: 1. Your Christmas tree is edible. Well, unless it’s made of plastic. The bark of evergreen trees is not only edible, but is actually a pretty good source of Vitamin C. Just don’t eat the pinecones. And speaking of trees… 2. The average Christmas tree takes seven years to grow to a height of 6 to 7 feet. ...and is used for about two weeks. That means, if you were born today, and a tree was planted today, you’d be in second grade…

Get into the Christmas spirit with five highly enjoyable and quote-worthy holiday movies
We’re counting down the days until Christmas, and the warning signs are everywhere. Christmas music on every radio station? Yup. Holiday décor at every turn? You betcha. Christmas specials on every TV station? Thankfully, yes. There are more movies dedicated to Christmas than any other holiday, but so few of them stand up to the real test: Can I watch this every year and not get sick of it? Obviously this is just one humble reporter’s opinion, but here’s five that have stood up to the test: 5. The Santa Clause (1994) Starring Tim Allen. It seems like a requisite for every aging movie star to do a Christmas movie at some point, but they rarely come out as well as this one. Sadly, the same can’t be said about its sequels. What I love most is…
