A former NFL player, a retired Coast Guard admiral and business leaders are among the seven alumni to be inducted this year into the Parkland School District Education Foundation's Distinguished Alumni Wall of Honor. The Wall of Honor was established last year and is inside the main entrance of Parkland High School. Those chosen to be inducted serve as an inspiration to students to achieve excellence and remind the community of Parkland’s commitment to a quality educational program, foundation officials said. Inductees will be honored at the foundation's second annual Annual Gala & Silent Auction on Monday, May 6, at the Holiday Inn Conference Center Lehigh Valley in Fogelsville. Stage and film actor, Ernie Hudson, will star in a one-man play, "Ghost in the House" at Cedar Crest College and Parkland High School starting tonight. The play will give audiences a chance to witness the life and struggles of Jack Johnson, the first African American Heavyweight Champion of the World. The first show is scheduled for Feb. 7 at 7:30 p.m. at the Parkland High School Auditorium and a second show is scheduled on Feb. 8 at 8 p.m. at the Tompkins College Center at Cedar Crest College. The Feb. 7 show will benefit the Parkland School District Education Foundation and will be preceded by a dining event at Outback Steakhouse - which will donate a percent of dinner sales to the Foundation. A group of five Parkland High School students emerged victorious in the first annual 'Are You Smarter Than A Teacher?' competition.
An academic "Super Bowl" of sorts was on tap Tuesday afternoon at the Parkland High School library with 230 students and faculty vying for top honors in the inaugural "Are You Smarter Than A Teacher?" competition. In the end, five Parkland students -- Molly Diamondstein, Elena Mandry, Kirby Peroza, Katrina Buckland and Ross Bloszinsky -- bested five faculty members in the final round to walk away with the championship. "We all went to a meeting, and we're all really good friends, so we decided to do it together," Diamondstein said. "It's shocking that we beat our teachers." "It was really fun," Mandry said. Are You Smarter than a Teacher? Some Parkland students are about to find out. The Spanish Honor Society and National Honor Society at Parkland High School will co-host the 'Are You Smarter than a Teacher?' contest at 3:15 p.m. on Jan. 29. Proceeds will benefit the Parkland Education Foundation. Students will form teams of five students each to compete against teacher teams of the same size. There will be a teacher or student reader of questions at each station in the categories of: math, science, sports, pop culture, history, and the arts. Actress Michaela Conlin is among eight accomplished Parkland High School alum who will be inducted into the district's new Wall of Honor this month, when Parkland's Education Foundation holds it first Gala. Anyone wanting to make holiday donations to the Parkland School District’s new Education Foundation in honor of a teacher, bus driver or other staff member can do so online or by mail. Officials are offering up the holiday gift option as a way to honor teachers or staff while supporting the foundation's "Celebrate Innovation" grant program that will be rolled out in January. Under the new program, staff will be able to apply for a grant to implement their creative ideas for enhancing classroom instruction or improving the community in some way. Instead of new tree ornaments or other store-bought items as holiday gifts, Parkland School District’s new Education Foundation is hoping parents and students will consider a donation to the foundation in honor of district teachers, bus drivers and other staff members. School board member Robert Bold, who is the board's liaison to the foundation, announced the holiday season campaign at the board's meeting on Tuesday. He said the holiday campaign will start the week after Thanksgiving.
