Pa. Teacher Misconduct Reports on the Rise

Pennsylvania received 563 reports of teacher misconduct in 2012, more than double the average 250 complaints it received in the previous three years.

By Melissa Daniels | PA Independent HARRISBURG — Pennsylvania’s Department of Education is toughening its standards for policing wayward teachers, who are seemingly growing in number. Every year, hundreds of educators are accused of misconduct, from helping students cheat to sexually abusing students. Shane Crosby, an assistant attorney who handles these cases, said from 2008 through 2011 the department averaged 250 annual complaints. In 2012, it received 563. Sometimes these situations result in criminal charges, and sometimes they don’t. Still, complaints of misconduct to the Department of Education could lead to a teacher losing his state certification, which is required for employment. Gov. Tom Corbett’s proposed 2013-14 budget …

A few rotten apples besmirch a dedicated group of professionals. I say prosecute to the fullest extent of the law. The public concern is if there are 563 teachers being caught, how many more are guilty without being caught? This, like the issue with priests and clergy is a direct reflection of society.
