Here are a few fun facts about celebrating a new year that might stay with you longer than your resolutions: 1. The first New Year’s Eve ball was made because of a ban on fireworks. In 1904, the owner of the New York Times threw a huge New Year’s Eve party with an enormous fireworks display. This became a tradition -- hence the Times Square party every year -- until 1907, when NYC banned fireworks. So that everyone would have something pretty to look at when midnight struck, a huge ball was made out of wood and iron and illuminated with 100 light bulbs. PennDOT Driver License Centers to Close for New Year's

Customers may still utilize PennDOT products and services online.

All Pennsylvania Department of Transportation's driver license and photo centers, including its full-service center in Harrisburg, will be closed Saturday, Dec. 31 through Monday, Jan. 2 in observance of New Year's Day. Motorists may still obtain a variety of driver and vehicle products and services online through PennDOT’s Driver and Vehicle Services website: www.dmv.state.pa.us Driver and vehicle online services are available 24-hours-a-day, seven-days-a-week and include non-commercial driver’s license and photo ID renewals; vehicle registration renewals; driver-history services; changes of address, and exam scheduling.
