Q&A with Upper Macungie's New Police Chief

New police chief of Upper Macungie Township says his force will be "committed to service"

Edgardo Colon, 45, chief of Upper Macungie Township's new police force, brings with him a varied background as a Marine, truck driver, foreman and state police trooper who rose through the ranks to commander. By answering a reporter’s questions, he shares a little more about himself with Patch readers. Q.     You live in Bethlehem but where have you studied and worked in the Valley? A.      I graduated from Liberty High School in 1984. I enlisted in the United States Marine Corps at the age of 16 and served from 1984-1988. I have an endearing love for the Marine Corps and all men and women who serve in all branches of the military. I worked for a welding supply distributor (Blue Valley Welding, Allentown) as a truck driver delivering …

Upper Macungie Gets Ready to Hire its Police Force

Upper Macungie's first police chief, Edgardo A. Colon, says Berks-Lehigh Regional officers are welcome to apply for the township police force, but they are not guaranteed jobs.

Upper Macungie’s future police chief said Berks-Lehigh Regional Police officers are welcome to apply for openings in the township’s upcoming department but they are not guaranteed jobs. Township Supervisors Thursday gave Edgardo A. Colon the go-ahead to start interviewing candidates for the new police department, which is currently slated to start Jan. 1 or sooner. That way, the current officers won’t be left hanging at the last minute wondering if they have jobs. Supervisor Sam Ashmar estimated that the new department will need at least 22 officers. Upper Macungie already hired …

These officers are already hanging in the lurch. Some have dedicated themselves to this force many years. But then again what more can you expect from a township that basically has 3 people calling the shots. …   more ›

State Police Commander Hired as Township Chief

Upper Macungie supervisors choose Edgardo A. Colón, station commander at Troop M Fogelsville, to lead a new police department that hasn't been created yet.

When Edgardo A. Colón retires from the Pennsylvania State Police on Aug. 17 to take a new job, he will extend his commute by about 50 feet. Colon, who is station commander at Troop M in Foglesville, works next door to the Upper Macungie Township building, where he signed on Thursday night to become police chief of the township's own department. Upper Macungie doesn't have it's own force yet, but has voted to leave the Berks-Lehigh Regional Police. The township plans to have a new police department in place by Jan. 1, 2013. Starting Aug. 20, Colon, 45, of Bethlehem will work as a consultant with the township as it makes the transition from being part of the Berks-Lehigh Regional Police Department to developing its own force. He will …

Is doing everything backwards the new Upper Macungie Policy? One would think that you would form a police force then hire someone to lead it but one would also think you would do a traffic study then approve construction. This policy explains alot   more ›
