Crash Sends 2 to Hospital in Lower Macungie, Police Say

Driver made an improper turn in front of another, causing collision, troopers say.

Two area drivers were moderately hurt recently on the Route 222 Bypass in Lower Macungie Township, according to police. State police at Fogelsville said Walter J. Gdowik, 91, of Allentown attempted to turn left from Route 222 onto N. Krocks Road at 4:34 p.m. Nov.  25. He turned in front of and then collided with a southbound vehicle on Route 222. That car, driven by Russell L. Shade, 52, also of Allentown, could not avoid colliding with Gdowik's car, police said. Shade's vehicle spun and came to rest in the intersection. Both drivers were taken to an area hospital by Cetronia Ambulance Corps, police said. Gdowik was cited for making an improper left turn, police said.

Lower Mac Hit-Run Driver Sought by Police

Nissan Xterra struck two parked vehicles and driver fled without stopping, troopers say.

Happen to know anyone with a dark-colored Nissan Xterra that is damaged now but wasn't prior to Friday evening? If so, state police, and no doubt two other interested parties, would like to know about it. Two vehicles parked in the 7000 block of Hunt Drive in Lower Macungie were struck by a hit-and-run driver about 11 p.m. Nov. 23, according to state police at Fogelsville. The offending vehicle, described only as a dark-colored Nissan Xterra, was attempting to round a curve when it struck the two parked vehicles. The driver did not stop, police said. Police did not describe or offer the damage done to the victims' vehicles. The Xterra should have resulting passenger-side damage, police said. Anyone with information is asked to call police …

UPDATE: Macungie Man Killed When Car, Tanker Collide on Buckeye Road Causing Fuel Spill; Witnesses Sought

State police seek witnesses to a fatal crash on Buckeye Road in Upper Milford that killed a Macungie man and resulted in a huge spill of diesel fuel.

A car collided with a diesel fuel truck at 9:52 p.m. Sunday in Upper Milford Township, killing a Macungie man and spilling thousands of gallons of diesel fuel, according to state police and emergency scanner transmissions. The crash killed James F. Heller, 61, of Macungie, according to the Lehigh County Coroner's office.   Heller was driving a Chevrolet Cavalier west on Buckeye Road and a tractor trailer driven by Matthew Phillip Wise, 26, of Fort Bragg, N.C., was attempting to turn east on Buckeye Road from Tank Farm Road, state police at Fogelsville said. The car reportedly hit the tractor trailer.  Buckeye Road was closed between Tank Farm Road and Chestnut Street and might remain closed most of today (Monday) for the fuel spill cleanup…

Woman Struck and Killed at I-78 Interchange Identified by Coroner

The 22-year-old woman was struck at about 5:30 a.m. Tuesday.

The 22-year-old woman who was struck and killed Tuesday at the I-78 Interchange and Hamilton Boulevard in Lower Macungie Township has been identified by the Lehigh County Coroner, according to a report in the Morning Call. Zhen Li, a Chinese national and summer Dorney Park employee, was in the U.S. on a work visa, it said.  The woman, who was struck at 5:36 a.m. by a Jeep Cherokee driven by Zachary James Edwards, 19, of Allentown, was taken to Lehigh Valley Hospital -- Cedar Crest and pronounced dead after 9 a.m., it said. Edwards, who was driving before sunrise was unable to stop before hitting the woman as he drove up the ramp. Anyone who witnessed the accident is asked to call Pennsylvania State Police at 610-395-1438.

Lower Macungie Crash Causes Gas Leak, Evacuation

A pickup crashed into three Lower Macungie condo garages, causing a gas leak that led to the temporary evacuation of 12 condos.

An 87-year-old Lower Macungie man crashed his pickup truck into three garages Thursday morning while attempting to back out of his driveway, causing a gas leak that required the temporary evacuation of 12 condominiums. No injuries were reported at the scene at Letterkenny Lane and Donegal Drive but the driver was taken to Lehigh Valley Hospital-Cedar Crest for a medical evaluation, according to state police from Troop M Fogelsville. The driver, John Howard Stevens of 6530 Letterkenny Lane, told Patch that the accelerator pedal seemed to malfunction and accelerated beyond his control, crashing the pickup.  The emergency was originally reported as a house explosion about 10:30 a.m. at 2892 Donegal Drive, which is in the Legacy Oaks 55-plus …

Right. My dad and uncle should not have been driving. Luckily they got ill and died before they could have a horrible accident. I am 66 and I would not drive if I was tested and told that I was no longer a safe driver. When we get older, we need to get into the passenger seat if we are a threat to the safety of the public. I wouldn't like losing the freedom but I would face the reality.   more ›

Orefield Teen Dies in Lower Macungie Crash

William Bickford, 19, of Orefield was killed in a rollover crash in Lower Macungie on Friday night

An Orefield teen was killed late Friday when he was partially ejected from his car, the car rolled over and he was pinned beneath, according to police. William David Bickford, 19, was driving southbound on Route 309 at 10:59 p.m. when he lost control of his car on a left-hand curve, according to state police at Fogelsville. His 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt went onto the shoulder and struck a concrete barrier of the Interstate 78 overpass. The car continued for about 100 feet before rolling and partially ejecting Bickford. Police said he was not wearing a seat belt. The Lehigh County coroner's office was called, police said.
