Two men have been charged with committing 11 burglaries in one month at stores across the Lehigh Valley, according to published reports. Both Edward J. Medelo, 35, of Easton, and Derek Deutsch, 36, of Allentown, have been charged with 11 counts each of burglary, theft and receiving stolen property, 12 counts each of criminal conspiracy to commit burglary and criminal mischief and one count each of attempted burglary, according to court records. They were caught by Pennsylvania State Police on June 11 as they were trying to break into the Binny Mart on Mauch Chunk Road in North Whitehall Township, according to The Express-Times. George Washington of Allentown had been charged along with his brother in more than 100 burglaries in five counties, including several in South Whitehall.
Burglar George Washington, who police said had broken into dry cleaners and other businesses in South Whitehall, Upper Macungie and other municipalities over 15 months, was sentenced Wednesday to 12 1/2 to 60 months in jail, according to reports on lehighvalleylive.com and The Morning Call. Washington, 29, of Allentown, had been charged in 104 burglaries and 12 attempted burglaries in Lehigh, Northampton, Bucks, Luzerne and Schuylkill counties from October 2009 through January 2011. Washington's brother, Angel Miguel Vargas, 31, also of Allentown, was sentenced in June to 20 to 40 years in jail for his role.
