Parkland Football, Velodrome Fan Appreciation Top Weekend Events

It's Labor Day weekend, the last unofficial weekend of the summer. It's one last chance to let loose and enjoy time with family and friends before the kids go back to school Tuesday. 
The National Weather Service forecast calls for a 50% chance of showers and thunderstorms throughout the weekend, so be sure to keep your eyes to the skies. 

Here's what's going on in and around Upper Macungie this weekend:

  • Are you ready for some football? Parkland High School is. The Trojans will begin defense of their District 11 football championship Friday night when they host Delaware Valley. Kickoff is at 7 p.m. at Orefield Middle School. Arrive early for a good parking spot and a good seat.
  • The Valley Preferred Cycling Center, at 1151 Mosser Road in Breinigsville, is chock full of holiday weekend events. On Friday, it's the World Series of Bicycling's UCI Madison Cup races, beginning at 7 p.m. It's also Fan Appreciation Night, featuring giveaways and drink specials.
  • The Great Allentown Fair continues its run through Labor Day at the Allentown Fairgrounds. For specific information on the fair, including hours, headliner acts and admission prices, click here
  • The Lehigh Wheelmen invite you to participate in the 2013 Donut Derby on Labor Day, which is Monday, Sept. 2 at the Valley Preferred Cycling Center at 1151 Mosser Road in Breinigsville. Start time is 9 a.m.
  • South Parkland Youth Association Football gets underway Sunday at Grange Park in Upper Macungie. Here is the schedule: 9 a.m. Pee Wee (100 pounds); 10:30 a.m. Jr Varsity (120 pounds); Noon: Varsity (140 pounds); 1:30 p.m. Jr Pee Wee (80 pounds); 3 p.m.Flag games.
  • Check out the Grossology exhibit at the Da Vinci Science Center in Allentown, which is in its final two weeks. Hours are 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday.
  • The nearby Lehigh Valley Zoo in Schnecksville is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. from Friday through Monday.
  • Want to play some miniature golf? Liber-Tee Miniature golf, at 7720 Adrienne Drive in Breinigsville, will be open all weekend. Play 18 holes and enjoy a hand-dipped ice cream cone afterwards. Call 610-391-1477 for specific hours.
  • Kids eat free Sunday at the Buckeye Tavern, located at 3741 Brookside Road in Macungie.
  • Everybody loves free. The nearby Allentown Art Museum is free to all on Sunday. Hours are noon to 4 p.m.
  • St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Church, at 1879 Applewood Drive in Orefield, holds Sunday Masses at 7 a.m., 8:30 a.m., 10 a.m. and 11:30 a.m.
  • St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, at 1028 Church Street in Fogelsville, holds Sunday Worship at 9:30 a.m.
  • St. John's UCC Church, at 1027 Church Street in Fogelsville, also holds Sunday Worship. Call 610-398-7015 for times.
  • St. Paul's UCC Church, located at the corner of Trexlertown Road and Church Lane in Trexlertown, holds a Traditional Worship at 9 a.m. and a Contemporary Worship at 10:30 a.m.
