This Week: 'Barktoberfest' and Parkland Homecoming

A Monday state and federal holiday and a large first-time festival highlight the coming week.

Here's what you need to know in Upper Macungie this week:

• Monday, which is Columbus Day, is a state and federal holiday. Upper Macungie Township is open for business Monday. Parkland School District schools are closed. Lehigh County offices, courts and District Judgeoffices are open. Most banksare closed. PennDOT driver's license offices are closed.Post offices are closed and mail will not be delivered.

• A full slate of activities including a scarecrow contest, parade, pet costume contest, K-9 acts, trick contests are scheduled and a plethora of food and drink will highlight Upper Macungie Township's first annual Barktoberfest this Saturday at township's dog park from noon to 3 p.m. The dog park is located at Upper Macungie Park on Route 100 in Fogelsville. For a full list of activities, click here.
  
  

• Parkland High School's Homecoming football game takes place Friday night at Orefield Middle School. The Trojans will face Bethlehem Catholic at 7 p.m. in a Lehigh Valley Conference game. The parade of floats and the naming of the King and Queen will take place at halftime.

• Parkland High School's annual Garter Bowl powder puff football game will take place at Orefield Middle School at 7 p.m. The game features Parkland High School girls squaring off in flag football games.

• The Parkland Community Library has paired with Five Guys Burgers and Fries, located at 4025 Tilghman Street in Allentown and 914 Airport Road in Bethlehem for a fundraiser from Thursday through Saturday. Present a the library flyer before purchasing your meal and 15 percent of your purchase will be donated to the library. Call 610-395-4881 for more information about how to pick up your flyer.

• Jaindl Elementary School in Upper Macungie holds its annual book fair this week, running Tuesday through Friday.

• The Parkland School Board will meet Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the administration building, located at 1210 Springhouse Road in South Whitehall.

• The Upper Macungie Planning Commission will meet Wednesday at 7 p.m. at the township meeting room, located at 8330 Schantz Road in Breinigsville.

• Indoor recreational volleyball take place Tuesday at  Fogelsville Elementary School from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m.  The program, sponsored by Upper Macungie Township, will run each Tuesday through March 25 with the exceptions of Dec. 10, Dec. 24 and Dec. 31. • The Fogelsville Fire Company Ladies Auxiliary will host bingo at the firehouse, located at 7850 Lime Street in Fogelsville, on Wednesday at 6:45 p.m. Doors open at 5 p.m. and the kitchen begins serving food at 5:45 p.m. For more information, call 610-395-5479.

• St. Paul's UCC Church in Trexlertown, located at 1249 Trexlertown Road in Trexlertown, will  host a Zumba class Friday at 9:30 a.m.
