'Challenging' Storm Hits Upper Macungie

Icy wind expected to follow Tuesday's snow, forecast says.

Tuesday's snowstorm was due to end overnight, but Wednesday was expected to bring bitter cold temperatures to Upper Macungie Township.

The National Weather Service issued a wind chill advisory for the township and the rest of the Lehigh Valley, saying that temperatures would drop below zero, with a wind chill of minus 15.

Wednesday's commute was expected to be hazardous due to drifting snow. Township supervisor Sam Ashmar said crews were expecting to plow into the night to clear Upper Macungie roads.

“It’s been challenging," Ashmar said Tuesday evening. "With the cold weather, it makes it more difficult for the salt to take care of the roads. “Right  now we’d prefer for people to stay off the roads.”

The snow was responsible for at least one accident Tuesday in the township. Police say 21-year-old Adriana Traube was traveling east on Schantz Road around noon when her car lost traction and slid into a utility polce.

Traube, of Catasauqua, was not hurt, although her car was towed, police said.

The storm also cancelled school for Parkland students on Tuesday. The district scheduled make-up days for students two weeks ago after a series of storms cancelled classes. It said at the time that any other lost days will be made up beginning Monday, June 16.
