Meals on Wheels Needs Help with Blizzard Bags

Volunteers are needed to help stock blizzard bags for Lehigh County Meals on Wheels clients

Winter will be here before we know it.

The homebound clients of Meals on Wheels of Lehigh County need your help to ensure that they have food to eat in case of poor weather conditions or another emergency when meals can't be delivered to them.

Last winter was a very mild one, but the year before Meals on Wheels had to cancel deliveries eight times due to poor weather conditions. Preparation is a must.

In the late fall, the agency sends out blizzard bags that contain a full day’s supply of shelf-stable foods that the clients use if deliveries are canceled. These bags are provided free-of-charge to the 350 homebound seniors and adults with disabilities served each weekday.

Meals on Wheels needs to make 900 bags because they replace them as needed as the winter goes on.

If you’d like to help collect food items for blizzard bags, the agency will provide you with a list of specific items so the bags will be consistent in nutritional content.

Please call 610-398-2563 or email Janelle Longenbach at jlongenbach@mealsonwheelslc.org if you’d like to participate.

Computer Aid Inc. has generously donated a convenient collection dropoff site in the west Allentown area and helpers will be able to drop off the food items on Oct. 10.
