Upper Macungie's volunteer firefighters used last weekend's Tough Mudder competition as an opportunity to raise a total of $7,513 for their organizations.

Township supervisor Sam Ashmar said the money will be divided among the three fire companies—Fogelsville Volunteer Fire Company, Goodwill Fire Company No. 1 and Upper Macungie Station 56.

The money was collected over two days. Ashmar said firefighters held collection cans along Glenlivit Drive, near one of the parking areas in Upper Macungie for the Tough Mudder competition, held last weekend on Raven Valley Farm near North Whitehall.

Ashmar said the Tough Mudder competition was an economic boost for the township and surrounding area, as participants stayed in local hotels and ate at local restaurants.

Supervisors had worried about the impact of so much traffic flowing through the township as participants made their way to the competition site and the potential strain on township resources. But Ashmar said everything went "as smooth as possible."
