Betty Duffy of Whitehall has been volunteering with Meals on Wheels of Lehigh County since the second day the program came into existence in 1971.
Now, 41 years later, she has been honored as the winner of the American Volunteer Contest by the Meals on Wheels Association of America.
Duffy was one of 24 nominees in the contest, which is held through Facebook where she netted the most votes. She was nominated by Meals on Wheels of Lehigh County. Duffy also volunteers with Meals on Wheels of Northampton County as well as for her church, the IronPigs and as a blood donor.
The award comes with $1,000 for the Lehigh County Meals on Wheels chapter to use for meals for low-income clients.
Duffy has logged more than 2,500 hours with the Lehigh County group and traveled 27,000 miles to deliver meals. She has delivered mostly the same route for 41 years, even while she was working nights and would have to deliver meals the next morning.
"The clients I have I just love them," she said in a video interview.
