Gas Drilling Study Near Lehigh Valley Begins

State officials have commissioned a study on the potential for gas drilling in Bucks and Montgomery counties.

A study is under way to determine how much natural gas could be obtained through drilling in Bucks and Montgomery counties.

Penn State scientists will conduct the study for the Pa. Department of Conservation and Natural Resources.

A big gas rush isn't expected but gas companies have expressed interest in drilling in Nockamixon, according to a Philly.com report.

The study will focus on what is known as the South Newark Basin of southeastern Pennsylvania and will be done by the end of June in 2015, according to PhillyBurbs, which reports that the study was included in a larger project to measure earthquake activity.

There's moratorium on gas drilling in Bucks and Montgomery counties until 2018.
