Varvara Lepchenko Looks to Open's Second Round

The Upper Macungie resident will play an Australian in the second round of the prestigious tennis tournament in New York.

Upper Macungie professional tennis player Varvara Lepchenko will play Anastasia Rodionova later this week in the second round of the prestigious U.S. Open tournament in Forest Hills, N.Y.

unseeded Mathilde Johannsson of France, 6-3, 3-6, 7-5, to move onto the second round. Previously, Lepchenko had not won a match at the U.S. Open since 2006.

According to information provided by the Women's Tennis Association, the 26-year-old is coached by her father, Peter Lepchenko, and became a U.S.  citizen last year.

According to information from espn.com, Lepchenko turned pro in 2007 compiling seven singles titles and three doubles titles, earning total prize money of $1,220,332.

She competed for the U.S Olympic Team, losing in the second round of the singles tournament.

Her career singles record for seven professional years stands at 358-240.
