Schools Launch Food Drive For Second Harvest

It's the fifth year that the Parkland School District has undertaken the initiative.

Students throughout the Parkland School District are collecting donations for the Second Harvest Food Bank, an initiative that last year culminated in students delivering 16,000 pounds of food to the center.

Donation boxes will be set up through the district's elementary, middle and high schools, as well as the administration building, through March 2.

The drive got under way Wednesday, Feb. 16, with schools setting up themes to drive donations.

At Kernsville Elementary School, for example, it's "Pugs and Kisses,"  with an autographed photo of Walter the pug as a prize.

At Schnecksville Elementary School, the top 10 donors get to do a morning news broadcast.

And at Fogelsville Elementary School, the theme is "Fill a Bucket,"  after the popular book "Fill a Bucket: A Guide to Daily Happiness for the Young Child."

This is the fifth year that the Parkland School District has held a food drive to benefit Second Harvest.

All of the food from all of the schools will be delivered to the Parkland High School in early March, loaded onto trucks and taken to the food bank. Three students from each school and their advisors participate in the delivery.

"It'a very powerful day," said district spokeswoman Nicole McGalla. By centralizing the collections at the high school, students get to see the impact of what they can do when they combine their efforts, she said.
