Fogelsville Fox Gets Delayed by Hurricane

Fogelsville Elementary's new mascot didn't make it to its own debut because of bad weather.

Last week, when Fogelsville Elementary opened it new fitness track, it was also supposed to debut the school’s new mascot, the Fogelsville Fox.

Unfortunately, bad weather throughout much of the country delayed its arrival, said Cindy Cook, the PTO Vice President of Fundraising at Fogelsville Elementary.

Cook said there is no estimated time when Fogelsville Fox will arrive, but there will probably be an assembly when it does.

Even without the mascot, it took the two years to raise the funds for the fitness track. And they did that with Math-a-Thons.

The Math-a-Thon was created specifically to raise funds for the walking path, said Cook. It was a one day event during both school years in which the students took a timed grade specific math test.  People "sponsored" the student and donated money for each correct answer or a lump sum.

The PTO also had one Read-a-Thon that lasted nearly an entire month. Again, sponsors were gathered, and they donated money per reading minute that the student read. The students wracked up more than 150,000 minutes reading.

All that math and reading translated to $14,000 to cover the cost of the new track.

The track was officially opened by principal, , Theresa Heller, PTO president and Cook on Friday, Sept. 9.
