Parkland Cyber Summer School A Success

Parkland School District administrators report an 86 percent success rate this summer using cyber-school methods rather than traditional methods.

 in the Parkland School District had an 86 percent success rate, according to L. Randy Claroni, the district's director of curriculum, instruction and professional development.

Claroni told the Education and Athletics Committee Tuesday that 110 high schoolers and six middle schoolers went through the program. Claroni said that out of 154 classes taken, only 22 students didn't move on.

Rather than getting traditional classroom instruction, students needing remedial help in summer were taught via a cyber school -- Advance Academics, based in Oklahoma City. The classes were held in the library.

With the cyber school in place, there was an administrator, two facilitators (teachers) and a technology person, in addition to the online instructors.

Parkland paid Advance Academics a $2,000 fee for training of its staff.
