What Do Upper Macungie's Fire Companies Need?

Township wants to conduct its first study of Upper Macungie's fire companies in 12 years.

It's been 12 years since Upper Macungie did a study of its fire companies, and a lot has changed in the township in that time.

There's more roads, more homes, more large warehouses and fewer firefighters.

With that in mind, the township thinks it's time for a new fire study and is set to ask for request for quotes.

This decision follows a meeting last week with the supervisors and the township's three fire companies -- Fogelsville, Goodwill and Station 56.

“We want to make sure we’re already ahead of the curve," said Supervisor Sam Ashmar. "We have 26 square miles of township. We have three fire stations…the number of volunteers is dwindling. We want to maximize our ability with the few men and women we have left.”

Last week's meeting brought a packed audience to the township building, but as Ashmar noted, there was a time when just one company could have done that.

Supervisors are expected to meet with the township fire commissioner and the chiefs and presidents of the three companies to discuss the study.
