Upper Macungie Police Force Could Start Sooner

Upper Macungie Supervisors amend the ordinance regarding the effective start of the townshiup's new police force.

The Board of Supervisors on May 23 voted to amend the ordinance that created Upper Macungie's police department to reflect a new the effective start date.

The revised ordinance now reads “on or before” Jan. 1. Exactly when the force will start, the supervisors couldn't say. The township has already , . They are all scheduled to start in August and begin building the force.

Ed Earley, chairman of the board, said 22 officers will probably be need to cover Upper macungie. The Berks-Lehigh Regional Police has 28 officers, he said.

“But when it comes out that Maxatawny is going to start its own force, [Maxatawny] will need six [officers], and all [current officers] will have jobs,” he said.

Under the current structure, Berks-Lehigh serves Maxatawny, Topton, Lyons and Upper Macungie.

The township has built a new, 12,000 square foot police station on the grounds of the township’s municipal building. It is scheduled to be completed in June.
