Township to Buy 6 Cars for New Police Force

Six Ford Interceptors will be purchased for Upper Macungie's new municipal police department

Upper Macungie is making progress towards launching its new municipal police department.

Borough officials announced they will buy six new police cars - Ford Interceptors - for use by the new force.

“It’s important that they have a good number of cars,” said Sam Ashmar, vice chairman of the township supervisors. 

On Aug. 17, Edgar A. Colon will retire from his job as lieutanant with Pennsylvania State Police and, three days later, he’ll take over as police chief of the  

The Upper Macungie force will replace the Berks-Lehigh Police in the township. Township officials the regional Berks-Lehigh force because of inequities between costs and service. 

Berks-Lehigh Police will continue to cover Upper Macungie through the rest of the year.

Meanwhile, Colon, now working as a consultant for the township, for the first time took a seat at the panel on July 5 for the township’s Board of Supervisors monthly meeting.

“We will be interviewing for officers from July 14-22,“ he said. “It’ll be the ones who have applied.“

About 22 to 32 people will likely be hired on the department, according to Ashmar. Officials expect to make job offers by August 1.

Colon made several announcements about his new department, including:

  • The new township police building will be completed by the second week of July
  • A new police department patch was being designed and would be released by the next monthly supervisors’ meeting.

In May, the township hired two police department lieutenants:

  • Joseph Wilson, of Lehigh Township
  • Michael Sitoski, of New Ringgold, Schulykill County

An office manager, Keri Diehl, of Kutztown, Berks County, has also been hired.
