Should Parkland Schools Start Before Labor Day?

In a Patch Poll on about whether it is a good idea for Parkland to start school before Labor Day, Patch readers were nearly split 50-50.

In a totally unscientific poll of 51 Patch readers, 26 said it was a bad idea for ; 25 thought it was a good idea.

Two weeks ago, Superintendent Richard Sniscak told school board committee members that it might make sense for Parkland to start the 2012-2013 school year before Labor Day. This would align Parkland with other school districts, especially the schools that also use the Lehigh Career & Technical Institute.

Some of those against commented that moving the school year up a week would interfere with family vacations. One Patch reader, , thought the idea was “just dumb.”

Nicole McGalla, director, Community Relations & Development for the district said there are some items within the district that need to be worked out before that topic is brought before the entire School Board again for discussion. And no time-line for that discussion has been set, she said.
