Upper Macungie Dog Park Now Boasts Area for Large Dogs

A dog park, located at Upper Macungie Park in Fogelsville, expands to include a second fenced-off area for large canines.

The second phase of the Upper Macungie dog park opened Jan. 20, and township officials say the new area has been well received by residents.

Township spokesman Valerie Brosky said a second fenced area of the dog park, located at Upper Macungie Park in Fogelsville, is reserved for large dogs.

Brosky said owners of small dogs can opt to use the large dog area if they so choose. However, the original fenced-in area is reserved for small dogs only.

Both fenced areas allow canines to roam without leashes.

"We've gotten a lot of positive feedback," Brosky said. "[Residents] just love this dog park. We're considering holding things like a pet C.P.R. class, because people are going so crazy over this dog park."

The township's Recreation Board needed about $17,000 to fully complete the park, which covers about three-quarters of an acre.

Fundraising included $4,000 garnered from Upper Macungie's 2012 5K Fun Run/Walk.

Two local Girl Scouts also raised funds and helped build the dog park as part of their Silver Award project.

The township, on its webpage, posted a comment by a visitor. It reads:  “I just got home from the newly expanded dog park. It was awesome! The high fence in the new section and the separate play areas are excellent additions.  I knew it was cold & didn’t plan to stay long but my two “snow dogs” had a great time playing with a few other dogs…before you knew it we were there for almost an hour. What a wonderful place for the dogs & dog owners in our community. Thank you for helping make it a reality!!”
