Michele Bachmann Introduces Bill to Rescind Congressional Pay Raise

"We have a spending problem in our country and we should be looking for areas to cut spending," Bachmann said ... "we should not increase government spending and add to the debt burden by giving members of Congress a pay raise."

In what will more than likely be the last legislative action Michele Bachmann will make as a representative of the Stillwater, Minn. area, the Sixth District Congresswoman on Monday introduced legislation that would rescind the portion of President Barack Obama’s executive order that gives members of Congress a pay raise

“I am calling on my colleagues in the House and Senate to rescind President Obama’s executive order that gives members of Congress a pay raise,” Bachmann wrote in a statement. “This executive order was not requested by Congress and we should reject it. We have a spending problem in our country and we should be looking for areas to cut spending. At a time when families across the country are cutting back we should not increase government spending and add to the debt burden by giving members of Congress a pay raise. We need to begin with ourselves and I urge my colleagues to join me in this effort.”

Michelle Bachman is an american hero
Amend January 01, 2013 at 11:37 PM
Michele Bachmann has made a life living off the "public dole". Her pushing to cut pay raises on the eve of her departure from congress hardly makes her an American hero. Save that title for those who truly deserve it.
PVG January 02, 2013 at 12:00 AM
Anyone who stands up to BO and his regime is a hero!
Amend January 02, 2013 at 12:12 AM
@PVG- your bias distorts your definition of such words. Guess you were equally as critical of President Bush's administration as it launched a war on false pretenses which costs thousands of American lies and trillions of dollars, a war Mrs. Bachmann supported. American hero indeed. The republicans hate for one man has made them into fringe extremists who prop up the likes of Bachmann as a presidential candidate. They use words like communist, socialist, Kenyan and regime to mask their true discrimination.

Totally agree with Michelle on this topic!!
Keith Jensen January 02, 2013 at 01:24 AM
All the way from NJ I came across this article as I also work in PA. I find it interesting that most of the posts are about MB when the issue is the real topic. We just put a poll up on our PATCH article @Rodgers you may want to do the same here while also putting links to your Senators and Congress. Heck, even letting the President know your opinion would help and a link to his contact page is embedded in this article under the PATCH Poll: http://fortlee.patch.com/articles/should-congress-federal-workers-vp-get-pay-raises
Amend January 02, 2013 at 01:46 AM
@Keith- thanks for the link, and the attempt to return the discussion back to the topic. I think the headline, and the political grandstanding by Mrs Bachmann definitely clouds the issue. Moreso tho is the hostile nature of political discourse these days. To the topic, I think after the "fiscal cliff" bs we've just endured, that no their shouldn't be any raises given. That sort of polarization and lack of productivity would never fly in the real world, but in Washington, where lobbyists and special interest groups rule thru financiall influence, it seems doing the people's work isn't really the focus.
another point of view January 02, 2013 at 05:21 AM
The legislation passed by the senate and house eliminated the congressional pay raise. Rep Bachman voted against the legislation. Political grandstanding at its best!
michael mirra January 02, 2013 at 07:35 PM
Bachman must not care if other politicians ostracize her from the party. People that will actually change their vote to vote for her are few & far between. Now she not only will have the image of being crazy among liberals, but only the over the top tea party will vote for her & the Republican Party itself will black ball her for life from any serious consideration as a team player. She will go down in flames along with the Tea Party. it always amazed me that anyone ever voted for her anyway. She is considered bat dung crazy.
Patriot2 January 03, 2013 at 12:44 PM
Funny how anyone that thinks differently than liberals are categorized as crazy!! Also funny how liberals are the least open minded to others ideas. Obama needs to start cutting people out of the federal agencies and get the staffing back to 2007 levels instead of promoting pay increases for federal employees. That guy is "crazy" to pitch for pay raises at this time.
Rosemary B January 03, 2013 at 01:39 PM
President Bush is no longer in charge. President Obama put thru those pay raises by executive order. Glad they were rescinded. She did the right thing. We do have a spending problem that Obama, as senator, said was unpatriotic. But as President he spends like crazy and is only interested in tax increases and debt ceiling increases. He is the one to blame for the last 7 trillion but we all will be on the sinking ship together, weighed down by the debt he refused to do anything about.
Rosemary B January 03, 2013 at 01:43 PM
And insults are so mature and the way to bring people together.
michael mirra January 05, 2013 at 12:41 PM
We think most of you are crazy becaause your way of thinking has no touch with common sense. Many of you will vote for her, but can't see the big picture that she will need party support to ever get a shot to run for public office. We also think you are crazy because you actually see logic in your thought patterns. If he is crazy to pitch for pay raises in your view, that's proof. He was smart to pitch for pay raises. The proof is he got it passed.
Rosemary B January 05, 2013 at 03:15 PM
Obama was the crazy one to pitch pay raises when we, the American Taxpayers, are all having our taxes raised by the payroll tax cut being eliminated by him in the fiscal cliff deal that only raised taxes, has increased spending and no spending cuts. . And he did not get the pay raises passed. He put them thru by Executive order! A cowards tool, if you ask me. Where was the executive order to help Hurricane Sandy victims?
michael mirra January 06, 2013 at 09:18 PM
The payroll tax cut being eliminated is the end of a temporary tax break that Obama passed when he first took office. It was stated at the time that it was temporary. Repbublicans complained then because less $ being withheld for the ss fund meant less benifits when they retired. Now he gave you back the oppertunity to build up your retirement handout that you won't complain about when you retire. Then it won't be a handout entitelment. You'll say you paid all your life & it's comong to you. It's only an entitelment handout when someone else cashes the check. RIGHT?
michael mirra January 06, 2013 at 09:23 PM
If you want to blame someone for Hurricane Sandy relief being screwed up, listen to your own party that is self destructing over this issue. Half your party has a heart & wants to help the needy, in this case, & half are still worried about the $ aspect & the budget. There is a reason that Republicans, like Crist turned Dem. Could Christie be next? Even Republicans are fed up with your party's insanity.
Rosemary B January 07, 2013 at 03:29 AM
I think the payroll tax cut was a tax cut that never should have happened since it farther starved the SS program that is cash strapped already. And I am not blaming anyone for any hurricane Sandy screw up. Just asking a question. Where was Obama's Executive Order to help those victims? The bill did not get 100% support because it had too much pork and earmarks in it for some people's taste. I thought Obama did not like pork or earmarks. The Republican brand is now so tarnished and twisted that they are damned when they do and damned when they do not. Damned when they support a bill with unnecessary spending and damned when they do not.
michael mirra January 08, 2013 at 01:17 AM
Obama needed to pass an executive order because Rosemary decided that is what he should have done? I understand that Barack is very disturbed that Rosemary B doesn't approve of his governing. Meantime, aside from Faux News & MSNBC talking points. What do you have to say about Michelle Bachman? That is what this post is all about, remember? So what do you think? Is she a Patriot, or a wack job. Ah, sweet mystery of life.
Rosemary B January 08, 2013 at 05:25 AM
This is not about me. I just find it hypocritical that he uses his Executive order to raise the pay of politicians yet does nothing for the victims of a natural disaster. He should have never ordered that pay raise. It was the wrong thing to do knowing that 98% of the country was about to see the payroll tax deduction (his idea again) expire and be hit with less money in their pay checks at a time when the economy is not exactly flourishing.
