Emergency Shelter to Close at Noon Thursday

County is closing the emergency shelter at Troxell and opening a "warming center" in Allentown.

The on Cedar Crest Boulevard in South Whitehall Township will close tomorrow at noon and transition to a warming center at Hope UCC Church, 1031 Flexer Avenue in Allentown, according to a press release from the county.

“Our senior citizen shelter population and those people most at risk have now been able to go back to the comfort of their homes,” said Thomas Nervine, Lehigh County Emergency Services director. “We expect that the remaining families in our shelter who are without power tonight will be able to return home tomorrow.”

The new center at Hope UCC will be open on Thursday, Nov. 3, from noon to 8 p.m. and on Friday, Nov. 4, from 8 a.m. – 2 p.m. At the warming center people can get a hot drink, plug in cell phonesand warm up.

After the snow storm, more than 100 people used one of the shelters, Nervine said.

Emergency Services at the shelters were also provided by South Whitehall Township, Parkland School District, PPL, The Salvation Army and the American Red Cross.
