Township police announced Monday that the department had begun using the Crime Mapping website to allow residents to map out and analyze crime in their neighborhoods.

The website maps 15 different types of crime, including theft, burglaries and DUIs. You can search by crime type, or by date.

Police say they want to use the site to help keep the public informed.

"We believe that a well-informed public has been proven to be effective in reducing crime," Lt. Joseph Wilson said in a news release. "It is our hope that these additional steps will help our residents look out for each other, and help the department solve crimes."
