Truck Fire Shut I-78 Tuesday, Police Say

Pennsylvania State Police said some eastbound lanes of Interstate 78 were closed for four hours Tuesday due to a tractor trailer fire.

A tractor trailer fire shut down some eastbound lanes of Interstate 78 for up to four hours Tuesday, according to Pennsylvania State Police at Fogelsville.

State police said a tractor trailer driver stopped on the shoulder of the roadway when he saw smoke coming from the rear wheels at approximately 3 p.m. Police said the tractor trailer broke out in flames shortly after stopping.

Police closed Interstate 78 at Route 22 and traffic was diverted to Route 22 eastbound.

Traffic backed up on Interstate 78 past Route 100 in Upper Macungie and the backlog spilled onto the Route 100 entrance ramps.

Police said the road closure lasted until approximately 5 p.m., when one lane was opened. Police said all lanes were opened at approximately 7 p.m.
