Traffic Accident Involved Radioactive Materials, Police Say

No leak after a Toyota truck carrying radioactive materials was involved in an accident Tuesday morning at the intersection of Route 222 and Grim Road.

Upper Macungie Police said a Toyota pickup truck carrying radioactive materials was involved in a rear-end collision at 6:40 a.m. Tuesday at the intersection of Route 222 and Grim Road.

There was no radioactive leak, officials said.

Police said the Toyota carrying the radioactive materials was driven by 26-year-old Casey Gallagher of New Tripoli. His truck was rear-ended by a truck driven by 66-year-old Howard Hartman of Newport (Perry County).

Police said a box carrying the radioactive materials was punctured, prompting police to call Goodwill Fire Company #1 of Trexlertown and the Lehigh County Hazardous Materials Response Team.

Police said the fire department and the hazmat team determined there was no leak or danger. Police did not specify the type of radioactive material involved.

No injuries were reported and both vehicles were driven from the scene, police said.
