Township Doctor Waives Hearing on Painkiller Prescription Charges
Charges against Dr. Jeffrey Thompson, 68, brought by state attorney general's office.
A 68-year-old Upper Macungie physician waived his right to a preliminary hearing Monday on charges he improperly prescribed the addictive painkiller oxycodone.
Dr. Jeffrey Thompson appeared before District Judge Michael Faulkner on felony charges filed last year by the state attorney general's office, according to online court records. He waived all 21 counts for further action in Lehigh County Court.
Agents began investigating Thompson when a number of pharmacies contacted the state about his prescribing practices, according to a previous Express-Times story.
Investigators allege Thompson did not include a "do not fill" date on his prescriptions, something that's been required by law for addictive painkillers like oxycodone since 2007.
The charges include the unlawful administration of a controlled substance by a practitioner.
Thompson remained free on $20,000 unsecured bail. He is being represented by Allentown attorney John Waldron, the records say.
