A 19-year-old man who police saw running from Redner's Market early this morning with a white bandana over his face has been charged with robbing the market, Upper Macungie police said.
Mario Canas, of Breinigsville, was in Lehigh County prison this morning awaiting arraignment, police said. Following a foot chase by police, he was charged with robbery and related offenses.
Police said he had a handgun, and cash, when taken into custody.
At 2:48 a.m., an Upper Macungie police officer saw a man, later identified as Canas, run out of the Redner's Market at 7150 Hamilton Blvd., according to police. The man was wearing a dark-colored hoodie sweatshirt, had a white bandana over his face and carried a black backpack. The officer followed in his patrol car as the man ran north on the sidewalk, past other stores, and around the side of the building at Blockbuster Video.
The officer began to chase the man on foot, ordering him to stop, but he continued running toward a car that was parked, with its lights on, to the rear of the Java Joint coffe shop, police said. The man tripped over some branches, and the officer caught up to him and took him into custody.
Shortly after, Lehigh County radio advised that a man armed with a gun and wearing a dark hoodie and white bandana and carrying a black bag, had robbed Redner's.
