Four people face drug-related charges after state police allegedly found 8 pounds of heroin in their rented car following a routine traffic stop on Interstate 78 in Upper Macungie.
Joel Alejandro Estrada-Anguiano, 34; Fanis Yudelqui Melo Degonazales, 48; Joel Quitero Carrillo, 29, and Alfredo Varas, 50, each face charges of conspiracy and possession with intent to deliver, according to arrest affidavits. Some of men had California and Ohio addresses, but police said the addresses could not be verified.
District Judge Michael D'Amore set bail at $1 million each.
According to court documents, a state trooper stopped a car driven by Estrada-Anguiano for speeding at 4:54 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 7, on Interstate 78 just east of exit 49. The driver had an invalid license and could not produce a passport or valid ID, police said.
The driver appeared nervous and would not consent to having the car searched, according to the documents.
A K-9 unit was called and a drug detection dog named Dano alerted officers to the presence of drugs. Police obtained a search warrant and found the 8 pounds of heroin in the car, the court documents say.
The men denied any knowledge of the heroin.
The car was due back to a rental company in Ohio on Oct. 7.
