Man, 86, Dies from Injuries in Upper Mac Crash

Vito Scarna of Lower Macungie was passenger in car involved in crash at Route 100 and Weilers Road, authorities say.

An 86-year-old Lower Macungie man has died of injuries suffered in a two-vehicle crash Thursday on Route 100, not far from his home.

Lehigh County deputy coroner Paul Hoffman said Vito Scarna of 1591 Pinewind Drive was pronounced dead at 8:11 a.m. Friday at Lehigh Valley Hospital-Cedar Crest.

An autopsy performed Friday showed the cause of death was blunt force injuries and the manner of death was accident. Upper Macungie police, who responded to the crash, said earlier that Scarna suffered a head injury.

Scarna was involved in a crash that occurred around 6:47 p.m. Thursday on Route 100 near Weilers Road, Upper Macungie -- not far from the Upper Macungie-Lower Macungie line.

According to Upper Macungie police, the accident happened when John Haley, 20, of East Greenville failed to stop at a red light at the Route 100/Weilers intersection.

Police said Haley, who had been heading north, collided with Edwin Colon, 33, of Allentown, who was crossing Route 100 from Weilers Road to Schaeffer Run Road.

Scarna, who was a passenger in Colon's vehicle, was trapped and had to be extricated by fire personnel. He was taken to LVH-Cedar Crest by Cetronia EMS with a head injury, police said.

No other injuries were reported. Police said Haley will be cited for failing to stop at the red light.
