Full-Time Drug Drop Off Coming to Upper Macungie

DEA grant will allow township to have a permanent place for people to get rid of old medication.

Every so often, the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency will work with local police departments to allow people to get rid of old prescription drugs.

It's a program that's always been successful in Upper Macungie, according to police Chief Edgardo Colon.

Last time out, the department collected 110 pounds of old medication.

Sometime in the next few weeks, the program will become permanent for Upper Macungie and few other Lehigh County communities.

Colon said the DEA has gotten a grant that will allow it to purchase secure receptacles for people to drop off unwanted drugs.

"Prescribed drugs," Colon stressed.

When the containers are full, the department's evidence custodian will lock them away until the DEA comes to collect them.

Other communities benefiting from the grant include Slatington, Whitehall, South Whitehall, Upper Saucon, Catasauqua and Salisbury Township.
