Probe Continues in Fatal Trick-or-Treat Night Accident

Fourteen-year-old Jordan Steinmetz was hit and killed by an SUV as he walked along Schantz Road in Upper Macungie. He had been trick-or-treating.

 

Berks-Lehigh Regional Police said Sunday they are continuing their investigation into the fatal pedestrian accident on Schantz Road in Upper Macungie.

He had been trick-or-treating with a friend, and he had been in costume.

The driver of the SUV has not yet been identified.

Steinmetz was walking west on Schantz Road when he was struck by the SUV, also traveling west on Schantz Road, according to a preliminary investigation. There is a "Watch Children" sign posted in the area, but on the eastbound side of the road.

The accident happened at 8:20 p.m. in the area of Balsam Street and Cottonwood Road. 

Coroner Scott Grim has ruled the child's death an accident.

The Berks-Lehigh Regional Police Department and the Lehigh County Coroner's Office are investigating. Anyone who witnessed this accident is asked to contact police headquarters at 610-683-8740.
