23-Year-Old Macungie Man Killed in Crash, Police Say

Upper Macungie Police say Steven Winkler, 23, of Macungie was killed Friday morning when his car crossed the center median of Route 100 and hit two tractor trailers.

A 23-year-old Macungie man was killed Friday morning when his car crossed the Route 100 center median and hit two tractor trailers at the intersection of Industrial Blvd., according to Upper Macungie Police.

Police identified the victim as Steven Winkler, 23, of Macungie, who was driving a blue Subaru WRX sedan.

Police said the accident happened at approximately 10:45 a.m. Friday, when the car driven by Winkler on Route 100 south crossed over the raised, center cement median and hit tractor trailers driven by George Betz, 70, of Coopersburg and John Taylor, 60, of Rome, N.Y.

Winkler was taken to Lehigh Valley Cedar-Crest Hospital where he was pronounced dead, police said. Lehigh County Deputy Coroner Eric D. Minnich said the cause of death was blunt force trauma to the head caused by the accident.

Betz and Taylor were not injured. Police said all three drivers were wearing seat belts.

Police said Route 100 was closed for approximately 90 minutes following the accident for an investigation. Police ask that anyone who witnessed the accident contact them at 1-484-661-5911.
