PPL Warns of Telemarketers, Door-to-Door Salesmen

PPL Electric Utilities reminds area residents that it does not engage in telemarketing or door-to-door sales for the purpose of encouraging residential customers to switch energy suppliers.

PPL Electric Utilities is echoing the Pennsylvania Attorney General's warning to beware of telemarketers or door-to-door salesmen who may be claiming to be PPL employees.

There has been a rash of overly aggressive and dishonest sales pitches in several Pennsylvania communities, said Attorney General Kathleen G. Kane in a press release dated March 20.

"In some recent incidents, sales people have been pushing consumers into choosing high-cost electric generation services," Kane said through the press release. "We encourage consumers to make sure they have carefully weighed the offer, and that they are dealing with legitimate energy suppliers before sharing account information and agreeing to switch providers."

PPL is reinforcing some key points about its business and its employees and contractors:

  • PPL does not engage in telemarketing or door-to-door sales for the purpose of encouraging residential customers to switch energy suppliers.
  • PPL may contact you by phone about your account or service in the event there's a problem with your service. In addition, virtually all visits to customer homes by PPL Electric Utilities or contractors are prearranged by the customer or through a call to the customer.
  • All of PPL employees and contractors must carry company-issued identification. If someone claiming to be from PPL Electric Utilities comes to your door, ask to see this identification. Keep in mind nearly all service employees also wear company uniforms and drive marked company vehicles.

If you ever have any doubts about a caller or visitor claiming to represent PPL Electric Utilities, or about the information you are being asked to provide, please call 1-800-DIAL-PPL (1-800-342-5775) for verification and remember to call your local police department if things don't check out.
