Bites Nearby: Primo Café & Gelateria

Rediscover your love of gelato.

The last time I had gelato was at Caesars Palace  in Las Vegas. I think that, at the time, I referred to it as ‘the nectar of the gods’ and vowed to give up ice cream in favor of gelato for the remainder of my life. Unfortunately, I haven’t come across any gelato that I’m as crazy about yet, so time and again I’ve found myself cuddling up to a pint of Ben & Jerry’s.

With summer fast approaching, I decided now was as good a time as any to rediscover my love for gelato. For this week’s Bites, I visited on Iroquois Trail in Allentown to test out what I’ve heard is some of the best gelato in the Valley.

Because Primo has such a wide variety of menu items, I felt like it was only fair to Patch readers to do a little breakfast/lunch/dessert sampler. Check out my review of each category below.

The Dishes: Cinnamon raising bagel, iced coffee, Splash of Summer Salad, and one scoop each of peanut butter, mango and cookies n’ cream gelato.

What’s on the Plate: The salad was tossed with glazed pecans, dried cranberries,  apples, carrots, peppers, tomatoes, onions, feta cheese and a raspberry vinaigrette dressing. I picked up a bag of kettle-cooked potato chips to enjoy with it, and a bottle of Stewart’s cherry soda.

How’s it Taste?  My buddy was happy with her cinnamon raisin bagel and coffee, especially because Primo offers such a variety of caffeinated choices, including lattes, steamers and teas. If you’re not much of a bagel person, they also have omelets and breakfast sandwiches.

The Splash of Summer Salad had a lot to live up to, and I’m happy to report that it delivered on its name. I’m a pretty big fan of any salad that includes fruit, but the glazed pecans and raspberry vinaigrette sweetened the deal. Even better? Primo doesn’t serve you one of those huge plates of salad that could feed a family of four for a week. It was a well-portioned main course and it didn’t make me feel too full to enjoy my gelato.

Speaking of gelato, I have only good things to report about the delicious desserts we tried on Saturday. Primo has a number of fruity flavors, like Mango, Coconut and Strawberry, but doesn’t ignore a sweet tooth either. While my lunch buddy opted for Mango, I chose a scoop each of Cookies n’ Cream and Peanut Butter Cup. While I was a fan of all three, I have to give Peanut Butter Cup the crown…until I can sample the rest of the flavors, that is.

Eat this Because: They really have everything. But don’t take my word for it; check out their website for the full menu. Next time you’re in a group of friends who can’t quite put their finger on what they’re hungry for, head to Primo. They really do have something for everyone.

Tab: $16.00

Etc: Like most places in the Valley, Primo offers delivery and catering services.
