Bites Nearby: PJ Whelihan's

It's delicious pub food in an environment of sports fans.

It’s Phillies season. As a fan, that means a lot of things to me, including religiously following probable pitcher schedules and anxiously awaiting the post-season. But as a fan and a foodie, it also means that it’s that time of the year again: when I can indulge in burgers, fries, and anything with the word ‘buffalo’ in its name.

So, for this week’s Bites, I decided to visit PJ Whelihan’s on Broadway in Allentown to celebrate baseball (and burger) season. Although I’d been there before, I decided to take on some new menu items.

The Dishes: Buffalo Nuggets and the Classic Cheese Steak.

What’s on the Plate: The Buffalo Nuggets were served with a side of fries and a pickle, and the Classic Cheese Steak came with a bag of chips.

How’s it Taste? The Buffalo Nuggets are technically an appetizer, but once you taste one of their nuggets, you’ll be hesitant to share. The dish is served with six pieces of chicken coated in one of PJ’s seven wing sauces, including Honey Barbeque, Chipotle Lime and classic mild. You also have options with your fries—spicy or regular. My wings were coated in mild sauce, and I opted for the spicy fries, both of which were delicious decisions. Despite having popcorn at a movie beforehand, I was able to polish off most of my “appetizer.”

I have trouble getting excited about a cheese steak unless it comes from center city Philadelphia, but it was hard to keep my eyes off of my lunch buddy’s cheese steak. Her sandwich roll was stuffed with finely chopped steak, spiking my levels of food envy. The pub also offers a chicken cheese steak, if that’s more your style. But either way, it’s a good choice.

Eat This Because: It’s delicious pub food in an environment of sports fans all willing to clink glasses over the latest home run, touchdown, or goal.

Tab: $16.00

Etc: Like pretty much every other sports bar, PJ’s has food and drink specials every night of the week, but Fridays offer a tempting special for seafood lovers: $11.99 Crabby Fridays, featuring Crabmeat Cheese Steaks and Crab Quesadillas.
