Bites Nearby: Pistachio's

The half price appetizer/drink specials during happy hour made it an affordable midday meal.

My income typically only allows me to dine at places that sell toys with their meals, but this weekend, I was itching to feel like a 23-year-old on the town instead of a 6-year-old in her car seat. So maybe it was fate when I saw the happy hour sign outside of Pistachio’s Bar and Grille on Cedar Crest Blvd.

From 4-6 p.m., Pistachio’s offers half off their drink menu and select appetizers, so I grabbed a friend and we were able to get our money’s worth in a restaurant that didn’t have a play place.

The Dishes: Chicken Satay, Margherita Pizza, Chicken Potstickers, a Sangria Martini and a Mango Martini.

What’s on the Plate: Our appetizers were served with dipping sauces and garnished with greens, and the martinis were served with slices of fruit.

How’s it Taste? In general, I’m a much bigger fan of picking at appetizers than I am at choosing one entrée and sticking with it, and I’m happy to report that all three appetizers we munched on were delicious.

Our Margherita Pizza was cut into four generous slices and although it wasn’t difficult to share, it’s also something you could probably conquer solo. The only thing missing was a side of dipping sauce, as I know most of the Margherita pizzas I’ve had have come with a side of butter or garlic. Still, the dish’s doughy crust was enough to keep me satisfied.

The Chicken Satay skewers were the perfect option for sharing—two marinated grilled chicken pieces are served on this dish with a side of Spicy Thai Peanut Sauce. Sure, the chicken was good, but it took everything I had not to use a spoon on the peanut sauce. Our Chicken Potstickers were also served with a soy ginger sauce, and they weren’t your typical frozen treat. These ‘stickers were made with white meat chicken and tasted better because of it.

Eat This Because: Pistachio’s is always a bit out of my price range, but the half price appetizer/drink specials during happy hour made it an affordable midday meal.

Tab: $25.00

Etc: Visit the Special Events section of the Pistachio’s website for discount deals. Pay special attention to their prix fixe dinner menu, which offers three of four courses for only $30 a person.
