Trexlertown Business Given Nod For Expansion

Upper Mac Zoning Hearing Board gives OK for Healthy Alternatives to erect cafe sign.

A business in the Trexler Plaza Shopping Center is set to expand and open a cafe following the Upper Macungie Zoning Hearing Board's vote Wednesday night that  approved a variance request for an additional sign.

The board granted the variance request of Lloyd Burg, the prinicpal owner of Healthy Alternatives, located at 7150 Hamilton Blvd. to erect a second storefront sign.

The sign will promote the store's planned cafe, which Burg said will open as early as  Monday if all zoning permits are received in a timely fashion.

Burg told zoning hearing board members the second sign on the storefront is needed as he couldn't place proper signage at the front of the Hamilton Blvd. shopping center.

Burg told zoners the neon signs for both stores will be shut off by 9 p.m. and that the new cafe's hours will cater to a luncheon clientle betweeb the hours of 11 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.

"The space next to us has been empty for four or five years, so the shopping center owners are thrilled," Burg told zoners. "We have been there for 17 years and have quite a following and my customers are thrilled."

Burg said the cafe will not be a "waitress style restaurant," but a place where clientele can order food to consume on-site or take out.
