It's a Party! Edge of the Woods to Celebrate 10th Anniversary

Make a funky shoe container, fly a kite or listen to music and nursery talks Saturday as Edge of the Woods in Orefield celebrates its 10th anniversary.

Edge of the Woods Native Plant Nursery is celebrating its 10th anniversary in a big way Saturday, with music, food and activities for all ages. The public is invited.

Edge of the Woods, at 2415 Route 100, specializes in native plants. Festivities will be from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday.

Here's what co-owners Sue Tansits and Louise Schaefer and the staff have planned:

  • 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Live Music by Prose from Dover Prose a.k.a. Barley Van Clief and Dave McCann, an acoustic-eclectic duo playing songs ranging from the '60s to contemporary sounds. 
  • 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Make a funky shoe container.  Bring an old shoe and create a unique planter. Fee:  $5 plus the cost of plants
  • 11 a.m. Nursery tour
  • 11 a.m. Ten Native Edibles: presentation by Liz Stauffer, EOTW Horticulturist  
  • 12:30 p.m. Gifts of Mother Nature: Nature’s Supermarket, Carla Messinger, founder Native American Heritage Programs
  • 1 p.m. Nursery tour
  • 2 p.m. Ten plants for All Season Bloom:  Toni Casaceli EOTW Horticulturist
  • 3 p.m. Nursery tour

Also throughout the day, there will be:

  • Scavenger hunt for children and families
  • Children’s planting activity and children’s create a mural activity
  • Kite flying!  Bring a kite and take advantage of our large field for flying a kite.  A few kites will be available as loaners.  Weather permitting.
  • Display of snakes, reptiles and amphibians by Clare Kubik of the Lehigh Gap Nature Center
  • A Scrapbook/photo collage on display that depicts key scenes from EOTW history. Add a picture of the work that Edge of the Woods inspired for your landscape.
  • Tenth anniversary T-Shirts will be available for sale
  • A raffle for a native tree. Raffle tickets $5 each, 5 for $20.
  • Food

Donations will support the educational and community outreach programs provided by Edge of the Woods Native Plant Nursery.  The programs include: American chestnut orchards – a research orchard, Habitat Program and demonstration and educational gardens.
