Bites Nearby: Dickey's Barbecue Pit

The local barbecue restaurant serves up delicious sandwiches with a side of southern hospitality.

I've been dreading the end of summer, mostly because I consider it to be the end of my favorite food season. I'm not ready to surrender my grilled hamburgers and corn on the cob. Luckily, thanks to Dickey's Barbecue Pit in Wescosville, I don't have to say goodbye to all my favorite summer dishes just yet.

Before I give my foodie feedback; I have to give Dickey's credit for their atmosphere. The space is small, but the decor gives the eatery the look and feel of an authentic barbecue joint. The tables are covered in blue and white checkered tablecloths and the walls are covered in vintage-looking rustic signs. Upon entering, the staff greeted us with a smile and a loud "Welcome to Dickey's!"

Ordering at Dickey's can be a little confusing at first, but you begin by choosing from their selection of slow smoked meats, including chicken, beef brisket and polish sausage and then choose how you'd like it served, either on a sandwich or platter, both of which come with at least one side.

The special on the day we visited was pork barbecue, so both my friend and I opted for pork barbecue sandwiches, and sides of Caesar salad and macaroni and cheese. I also added one of Dickey's Giant Stuffed Bakers which was, literally, the largest baked potato I've ever had, topped with scallops, sour cream, bacon and cheddar cheese.

The pork was everything we expected it to be: melt-in-your-mouth, tender and flavorful. Dickey's has three sauce options for your barbecue: original, sweet and hot n' spicy. I'm partial to Dickey's original flavor, but the sauces are self-serve, so if you're looking for a little variety, dish out all three and determine your favorite.

Our sides were very good, but the Giant Stuffed Baker really stole the show for me, as it was a bit more flavorful and definitely more filling than the salad or macaroni and cheese. The cherry on top of an already delicious meal was free unlimited soft-serve ice cream in your choice of either a dish or cone.

Whether you're looking for something different for lunch or a little bit of comfort food in the middle of chilly fall weather, this local restaurant will serve it up in hearty portions.
