Air Products Working on First Russian Project

Trexlertown-based company providing technology to natural gas project in Siberia.

Air Products has announced it will be part of a liquefied natural gas operation in the Yamal Peninsula in northwest Siberia, the first time the Trexlertown-based company "deploys" its LNG technology and equipment in Russia.

In a news release posted on the company website, Air Products said it will supply three MCR Main Cryogenic Heat Exchangers for the Yamal LNG Project. They will be installed at the heart of a process called "propane precooled mixed refrigerant liquefaction."

The Yamal Peninsula is part of the Arctic region and holds Russia's largest natural gas reserves.

LNG from the Yamal LNG Project will be used primarily to meet the growing energy needs of Asia and Pacific Region countries, the release said.

A majority of the total worldwide LNG is produced with Air Products’ technology, the release added.

“This is the largest project ever of its kind to be located in the Arctic, and the most northern LNG facility in the world," said Jim Solomon, director - LBG at Air Products. "There are some specific challenges with it, beyond the very remote location, such as huge temperature swings.

"Our equipment and process were specifically configured to address these challenges, and we are very excited at the prospect of playing a significant role in this landmark project,” Solomon said.

With the addition of Russia, Air Products’ proprietary LNG technology will be operating in 17 countries, he noted.

The release also includes a comment from Igor Chasnyk, deputy project director for pre-operations at Yamal LNG.

“After a technology assessment, Yamal LNG has selected Air Products based on [its] worldwide experience in natural gas liquefaction," Chasnyk said. "We are confident Air Products’ MCR process is the most suitable technology available within the parameters of the project."
