Parkland School Board Mulls New Technology Policy

The Parkland School Board is examining new policies that would allow students to use personal electronic devices for classroom work with the blessing of teachers and administrators.

The Parkland School District, under new guidelines being considered by the Parkland School Board, could allow students to use personal electronic devices on a limited basis for instructional use only.

The school district, under the proposed guidelines and at the discretion of teachers and administrators, could allow the use of student-owned laptops, netbooks and tablets.

Unacceptable devices include anything less than 7 inches, including iPhones, Blackberrys, Droids or networking equipment such as modems or air cards.

Students would be able to bring their own devices from home as to use only as part of the instructional program. Students must obtain permission from their parents in writing each year.

The proposed policy states that each classroom teacher will decide if student-owned technology is needed and what type of devices may be utilized.

The school board will review this policy for a first reading at its Tuesday, Aug. 20 meeting.
